Lincoln's First Photographer Ended up in Sacramento
Jeff visits the Sacramento grave of Nicholas Shepherd, the very first person to take a photograph of Abraham Lincoln.
Mr. Shepherd was a daguerreotypist (early photographer) in Springfield, Illinois and knew Lincoln. He took the portraits and Abe and Mary in 1846. When the Gold Rush happened in California, Shepherd came out west and when the Donner Party was forming, Abe almost joined them!

I met Mr. Burton on the final day of the festivities in Railtown. Although it was the only day I could attend this year, I was determined to meet him since Blazing Saddles is one of my top five favorite movies. I was fortunate to catch him, and he graciously autographed the sun visor of my DeLorean, which I drove up there. Jeff, your episode on "Back to 1885" was awesome, and I'm glad you had a blast! It was also cool to see my footage make it into the episode! There is discussion amongst the locals to keep this tradition alive, so we'll see what happens in Sept!

The stainless steel sculpture on Rudy Perpich's grave (8:44) is by the sculptor Gloria Tew. It represents Rudy and and his wife Lola leaning on each other for support. The bronze statue that you described as a forlorn woman (11:11) is also by a female sculptor, Nellie Verne Walker. It was cast in 1920. When you walked toward Paul Wellstone's grave you passed by the other Gloria Tew sculpture at Lakewood (21:35). It is not, as you stated, a memorial to Paul Wellstone. It is an abstract representation of two dancers and is on the grave of a young woman named Stephanie Laitala, who died in 1994. The sculptor Gloria Tew died in 2022 at the age off 98 and is also buried at Lakewood.

Thank you so much! This is outstanding. I taught high school English and regularly showed my classes "Cool Hand Luke" as it fit the trope or archetype of the unexpected or unwilling tragic hero. My students would compare Luke to McMurphy in "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest" or "Mr. Rogers." "Cool Hand Luke" is also just chock full of symbolism. It's like a scavenger hunt. My students always loved it. I think I knew that it had to have been shot in Central CA somewhere, but I always assumed somewhere like Merced or Mariposa. It's cool to know that it was actually closer to us here in the Bay Area. Thanks again! Great stuff.
